- Supported title, artist and creator boxes
- Location, date, comment and description fields
- Cover art and metadata thumbnails
- Private descriptive boxes where safely classified
- Original metadata box payloads through same-size replacement or rebuild
- Exclusive H.264 unregistered SEI user data through equal-size filler replacement
MP4 METADATA REMOVER
Remove metadata from an MP4 video
An MP4 is a hierarchy of boxes containing media tracks, tables and descriptive records. KillMetadata identifies those structures, removes supported privacy metadata from a new copy, and verifies the result without decoding or re-encoding picture or sound.
THE CLEANING PLAN
Remove what exposes you. Keep what makes the file work.
Every field is shown before the rewrite and classified by action and coverage.
- Encoded picture and sound essence
- Sample tables, timing and synchronization
- Subtitles, chapters and accessibility tracks
- Color profile, HDR and codec configuration
- Burned-in text or visible watermarks
- Spoken personal information
- DRM and CENC-protected content
- Ambiguous or overlapping media extents
- Mixed, registered, malformed or unsupported codec user data, which remains partial
WHY THE ENGINE MATTERS
MP4 boxes are patched around the media essence
The ISO BMFF handler walks bounded box sizes and classifies metadata separately from track and codec structures. It replaces removable boxes with safe free space and can replace an exclusive H.264 unregistered-user-data SEI NAL with equal-size filler without decoding or re-encoding picture or sound.
The verifier checks the rebuilt box tree and residual metadata. DRM, invalid sizes, ambiguous extents and structures that cannot be preserved conclusively are rejected.

A four-step privacy check.
Metadata cleaning is one part of a safe sharing workflow.
- 01Review creator, location and date boxes
- 02Confirm track, subtitle and HDR structures are preserved
- 03Create the cleaned MP4 copy
- 04Test playback, seeking, audio sync and subtitles
QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Know the boundary before you clean.
No vague “100% clean” claim.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The cleaner runs in your browser, has no upload endpoint, and only enables the file picker after its processor assets are available locally.
Is the original file changed?
No. KillMetadata reads the original and creates a separately named cleaned copy. It never overwrites the source file.
Does metadata removal change video quality?
Supported MP4 files are cleaned without decoding or re-encoding picture or sound. A bounded H.264 user-data-only SEI NAL may change to filler, while encoded picture and audio essence is preserved.
Why are some MP4 files rejected?
Encrypted tracks, ambiguous extents or malformed box sizes can make a metadata-only rewrite unsafe. Rejection protects the original and prevents a corrupt output.
The picker opens only after offline protection is active.
