WHY THE ENGINE MATTERS

EXIF, IPTC and XMP are different carriers

EXIF is a TIFF-style directory embedded in or referenced by an image container. IPTC is commonly used by publishers, while XMP is an XML packet used by Adobe and many media tools. Removing only an EXIF block can leave the same author or location in another carrier.

KillMetadata scans all supported carriers for the detected image type, presents them by action, and reopens the resulting bytes in a fresh worker rather than assuming a successful write means a clean result.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The cleaner runs in your browser, has no upload endpoint, and only enables the file picker after its processor assets are available locally.

Is the original file changed?

No. KillMetadata reads the original and creates a separately named cleaned copy. It never overwrites the source file.

Is EXIF the same as all photo metadata?

No. A photo can also contain XMP, IPTC, comments and format-specific text or application data. The cleaner scans supported carriers beyond EXIF.

Why preserve orientation?

Many cameras store the sensor pixels in one direction and use an orientation tag for correct display. Removing it without rotating pixels can make the photo appear sideways.
