DOCUMENT METADATA REMOVER

Remove metadata from documents

Documents often carry authors, organizations, editing software, creation dates and revision identities. PDFs and Office files store these in very different structures, so KillMetadata uses a format-specific engine rather than a generic filename scrub.

THE CLEANING PLAN

Remove what exposes you. Keep what makes the file work.

Every field is shown before the rewrite and classified by action and coverage.

Remove
  • Document properties and author identities
  • Creation, modification and print dates
  • Titles, subjects, keywords and comments
  • XMP or OOXML package properties
  • Supported comment and revision author attribution
Preserve
  • Pages, text, images and layout
  • Cells, formulas, charts and slides
  • Accessibility and language information
  • Required EPUB identity fields and package structure
Outside this guarantee
  • Redaction of visible text or images
  • Hidden sheets, slides or document text as content
  • Attachments and embedded objects unless explicitly supported
  • Macros, encrypted files and executable content

WHY THE ENGINE MATTERS

Metadata cleanup is not document redaction

A PDF uses dictionaries and streams; Office documents are ZIP packages containing XML parts. Each handler removes known metadata from its own structure and performs a fresh parse of the output.

Comments, revisions, hidden sheets, speaker notes, attachments and embedded objects can contain sensitive content. They are detected or explained separately because deleting metadata alone does not redact that content.

BEFORE YOU SHARE

A four-step privacy check.

Metadata cleaning is one part of a safe sharing workflow.

  1. 01Choose the exact document type below
  2. 02Review hidden-content warnings separately from metadata
  3. 03Check whether signatures block or require confirmation
  4. 04Open the saved copy in its normal document app

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Know the boundary before you clean.

No vague “100% clean” claim.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The cleaner runs in your browser, has no upload endpoint, and only enables the file picker after its processor assets are available locally.

Is the original file changed?

No. KillMetadata reads the original and creates a separately named cleaned copy. It never overwrites the source file.

Does this redact names visible on a page?

No. Metadata removal does not redact visible text, images, comments as content, or other information a reader can see.

What happens to signed or encrypted documents?

Encrypted and password-protected documents are rejected. Signed PDFs are rejected; other supported signature or provenance records can require explicit confirmation when cleaning would invalidate them.

Runs locally in your browserReady to inspect your file?

The picker opens only after offline protection is active.
